A boat is a strange, wonderful place to mark a big moment. No traffic, no phones ringing, no waiter hovering — just the river, your group, and however much time you've booked. Here's how the proposals, anniversaries and milestone celebrations we host actually go.
Why the water works
Most proposal spots in Porto are also everyone else’s proposal spots — the same three miradouros, the same photo angle, the same other couple waiting their turn. A private cruise removes the audience. You choose the moment, the boat holds it, and the person doing the asking gets the one thing hardest to arrange on land: privacy with a view.
The ask itself
Most proposals happen either right after departure, while the group is still settling in and the view of the Ribeira is opening up behind them, or under Dom Luís I on the way back, timed with the golden hour on a sunset booking. Neither is a rule — a few guests have asked us to simply say the word when the light looks right and let it happen naturally.
Anniversaries and birthdays
These tend to be less about a single moment and more about the whole two hours — the point isn’t a photograph, it’s an afternoon or evening that feels different from an ordinary one. A milestone birthday with the guest’s closest people, a 25th anniversary revisiting the city where a couple met, a retirement send-off from colleagues who chartered the whole boat: the boat does the same job in each case, which is to remove a group from their usual surroundings and put them somewhere memorable together.
What we can arrange
Private bookings open the door to extras. Tell us what you’re picturing and we’ll say what’s possible for your date:
- A photographer — to capture the moment without you having to hand your phone to a stranger.
- Flowers or a small decoration — on board for the occasion.
- A cake or a specific dessert — brought aboard for the group.
- Particular wines or local flavours — beyond our usual selection, with enough notice.
- Music — a specific playlist, or a musician for special requests.
None of this is a fixed package on the site on purpose — what’s possible depends on the date, the group size, and how much notice we have.
Timing it
The Sunset Cruise is the natural choice for proposals and romantic anniversaries — the light does most of the emotional work for you. The Day Cruise suits family celebrations, milestone birthdays with a wider group, and anything where the occasion matters more than the hour.
Tell us the occasion when you book, even if you’re not sure yet what you want arranged. It’s easier for us to say yes to something last-minute if we already know it’s coming.
How to book it
A private booking on either cruise gives you the whole boat for your group, so the moment isn’t shared with strangers. If you already know it’s a celebration, mention it when you book — through the site, or directly with us — and we’ll talk through timing and extras before the day.
